What are you tying to do with PuTTY on linux?

Are you familiar with SSH? SSH provides the same functionality as PuTTY and is available on pretty much every build of linux.

You have to untar the file and configure and make and make install.
Are you sure you want to use putty? putty is not the best terminal for linux. I would advise putty on windows, but there are better ones for linux which are easier to install.
What about konsole? or the wonderful yakuake?

you don't need konsole or yakuake if you use ssh.
ssh is running with konsole or yakuake or another terminal.
If you managed to run ssh, then you are already running something like konsole.
