Putting user files in larger directory

Hi all,

I am creating a work environment on Debian Squeeze. I am the system admin and I want to create a directory for each department with a personal folder for each person in the department. In a Windows environment it would be something like C:/department1/user1, C:/department1/user2, C:/department2/user3, C:/department2/user4

How do I do this in Debian?? Every user has a home folder that's all I can see! I don't understand the directory structure.

When setting up user accounts you can specify whatever directory you want for their home. So instead of /home/user you could create /home/department/user. Though you would need to be careful with permissions if you're going to be playing with the home directories.
