pupose of &?


Sometimes I see this & sitting after a command e.g. designer & at the prompt. Whats the meaning of the &? It runs with or without it...

The ampersand will send the program into the background and return you to a prompt immediately.

Ah! Thanks! Now I dont have to spawn a dozen shells if I have several processes launched....
