Hello,

A newbie issue with public key authentication.

I ahve two linux boxes with user nagios configured on both. I have enabled public key authentication brom serverA to B by copying id_rsa.pub(of ServerA) to authorized keys(of serverB). Also verified permissions(.ssh is set to 600 and authorized keys is set to 700). Still when I do ssh nagios@serverB from server A, it is asking for password.
To debug further, I enabled -vvv option and tried ssh. Below is the output. Could anyone please help me in analyzing the below output and identifying where is it going wrong.

Hi,

What's the Linux distro and version you're using? Also post the relevant part of your sshd_config file, more in particular if PubkeyAuthentication is set to yes and is PermitRootLogin set to yes (since you're connecting as root apparently).

It seems there is problem with /root/.ssh/id_rsa file, maybe you could redo ssh-keygen -t rsa1 ?

(-t rsa1: rsa key for protocol 1)

Another advice, instead of copying over the pub part of the key to the other server you can use the command
which will take care of everything without the need to control permissions etc...

Are you by any chance using RHEL6.2 or a clone of that one? I've had the same problem on a RHEL6.2 server and the culprit was SELinux. If that's the case, the run the following (for the root user):
You'll get some messages from restorecon. Try after that.
