ps does not terminate

I mounted a remote file system via shfs. Suddenly I could not access the remote files any more. So I tried to umount the filesystem, but it responded "device busy". So I tried to lsit the processes which access the filesystem via "lsof >mount point<". The result was:
Code:
lsof: WARNING: can't stat() ext3 file system /dev/.static/dev
      Output information may be incomplete.
after which the console widow froze (even CTRL-C did not work any more).
Using ps (as root) prints some processes, then freezese as well.

What did I do wrong?
What to do now?

Regards,

Lotharster

Inaccesible filesystems are a real killer. Any process rthat touches them, even tabcompletion will hang totaly.

I myself have never managed to even force umount a hung NFS mount. Sometimes fixing the hang at the other end helps, but sometimes its a reboot of the client machine that helps ultimately.

Network filesystems are a killer if they get get cut without a clean unmount. Im sure there are better wasy to recover tho, but i've lost my faith in NFS and shfs in erroneous situations..
