proxy

Glad to be part of the community!

I am a new Linux user and want to know how to use Linux as a wireless connection in an aprtment complex that only uses Windows?

Apparently has something to do with a proxy?

Anyone know how to get rid of the block as I could only use Windows and it not loaded on my laptop on purpose!

aprreciate any help

THanks!

Not clear what you're really after... if you want to create a central system for the users, there are various solutions out there, like http://coova.org/CoovaChilli

If you're just a user, then there should be nothing specifically interesting in using a Linux client.

Hi Chris,

Thanks so much and so sorry I did not reply to you.

No.. that was not what I meant.

I will try to explain better now.. I am not very familiar with Linux at all.. in fact, it is my husband who asked me to contact you as he is very familiar with Linux!

I am in an apartment complex that uses Verizon FIOS only and found out that they do not support Linux. So, I wanted to use Linux on my Dell D600 as do not have windows loaded on because I hate it!!!

I can log on with my laptop but not gain any access to Firefox.. but only in this aprtment complex. It works at hot spots like Starbucks .etc.

Do you or any one else very familiar with Linux know how to get access then? It seems that Verizon is just trying to make me use them as my provider and I do not wish to do so and does not want to help.

Any help appreciated...

Jill

OK, I'm in the UK, so haven't a clue what fios is, other than a daft name for what looks like a totally standard internet package. Presuming that's the case it's totally irrelevant who your ISP is etc. You just want a wireless connection to your local router I guess. You've not said what distro you're using but on my Fedora laptop for example, I have NetworkManager running and I just click on the icon in the tray, select the right SSID and log in with the details that are usually printed on the router by default. If there's something non-standard about their setup, then I wouldn't know what that might be.
