Protocol not supported Debian

Greetings all

when I first installed debain I could get into my lan accessing xp windows on another pc but for some reason I can not now here is what I get

Protocol not supported

this happens when I click on the lan Browser icon which is on the Konqueror menu browser.

now I do not remember changing any thing as far as my network goes but I do have a question about one thing concerning network browsing

in the Control Center under Local Network Browsing Control Center there is a drop box (MS Windows encoding) what should this be on.

also how can set up my screen to 1024x768 for some reason it never installed that option how can i set it up to do so?
