proper way to install Fedora to boot with Acronis OS Selector
 

I have 2 XP Installations, and a OSx installation across 2 seperate Hard Drives, and Acronis OS Selector boots them all fine.

Now I go install the latest Fedora Core into its own ext3 partition with a seperate ext3 boot partition, and I put Grub on the boot partition. Acronis OS Selector see's Linux, but when I goto boot it, all I get is a blank black screen with "GRUB" in the upper left corner.:confused:


How can I properly install FC5 onto my Sata Drive so that Acronis OS Selctor can see it and boot it sucessfully?

Not that anyone SHOULD know, i just thought I'd ask here. I also posted this question in the actual support forums of Acronis.

I don't know specifically how Acronis works, but this does not look right:
As I understand it, booting MUST start at the mbr of drive 1. (I'm guessing that is where Acronis lives). If Acronis needs grub at all, then grub would not go in the /boot partition--it would go in the **boot sector** of the partition with the Linux kernel. This is--eg--how grub in the mbr boots Windows---by calling the NTLDR boot code in the Windows boot sector (using the grub "chainloader" command.

Ok that translates into installing GRUB to '/' ?

Thats what someone else who had used Acronis before adviced me to do but they said the option to do that during the install is well hidden.

Acronis is booting Grub but the Linux boot is failing at GRUB.
I have sometimes seen GRUB take a while to start up. What happens if you just wait a few minutes?
Are you able to boot Fedora with the install media?

EDIT:When I boot with the slave drive missing GRUB sits at a "GRUB stage 1.5" prompt for about 30 seconds, and then a "Please wait GRUB Loading..." prompt for another 30 seconds. When the slave drive is in GRUB boots in seconds.

oooh geeze nah the rescue media can't seem to mount the partiton.

I mean this is like my 3rd time installing this mess and trying to chainload it from 1 of 2 boot loaders I WANT to use. NO i do not want to use GRUB nor LILO as my main bootloader in the MBR. I want either Acronis OS Selector, or what I just switched to last night to see if it fixed the problem, the WindowsXP bootloader.

NO!!

There are at least two places where you typically find boot code:

1. In the mbr: SOMETHING must be here--the bios sends control to the first hard drive, sector 1 (aka the mbr)
2. In the partition boot sector: Partitions typically have two empty sectors at the beginning. Uses include: secondary boot code, and partition info for a disk having extended/logical partitions. In Windows, for example, NTLDR lives in the boot sector.

Note that when you put grub in the boot sector, it becomes secondary boot code. You still need something in the mbr to take you to the boot sector.
