Promise TX2 ATA 100 and Dual Boot XP/RH8

I am trying to install RH8 on a second HDD on my machine to enable dual boot to XP and Linux. I already messed up once, so I want to check before I get in another pickle!

First time I tried this Linux installed fine, but the XP failed to load after I tried to logon. Think this is because XP did not recognise Linux - so I have now put a 250mb partition on the from of HDD 2.

Since then, I have bought a Promise ATA 100 Ultra TX2 controller card since I wasn't very happy about having all four IDE ports (Master and Slave) used. Have installed this fine under XP.

About to start again, but I note from the forum that other have had problems with other distubutions and the promise, so I wondered if anyone had any advice before I kill my system again.

So - to summarise, I have:

Asus A7V333 with Athlon 2000

On Mobo:
IDE 0 = IBM Deskstar 80GB with XP
IDE 1 = Liteon DVD

On Promise
IDE 1 = Seagate 6GB HDD with 250mb FAT32 partition. Want to put Linux here

IDE 2 = Liteon CDRW

Will I run into difficulties, either thorugh Promise card or through fact that I can't boot directly from Linux drive. (I though last time Grub ends up in MBR on HDD 1 so this shouldn't be a problem?)

Thank you so much!

Why do you have 250MB FAT32 partition on the disk you want to put Linux on? Get rid of it...when making partitions during the RH install, just erase it, and use the space for linux.

If you have probs with the install let us k now...

If you want to run Linux and XP and don't care where Linux is as long as it works, may I suggest this?

1) boot xp
2) scandisk thorough (need to reboot)
3) defrag thorough
4) partition your 80GB HDA to be
20gig - ntfs - xp
10gig - ext2 - linux
50gig - fat32 - my doc
5) install linux on /dev/hda2
mount /
type ext3
format yes
check for bad sectors, no

Sorry 250mb doesn't cut it. You'll need 5gig+. 5 will be filled up if you plan on installing extra software. 10 will be good enough for a long while. Save your Linux & Windows files on my_doc (50gig).

Partition Magic will partition for you for a price. Very easy to use under Windows.

I have put a second 250mb WINDOWS partition on 2nd HDD to try and correct the earlier problems I had first time round - I got Linux to boot but Windows hung every time I tried to logo on. (Would say - Loading Personal Setting, but never got further).

This was done at the recommendation of other posts in this forum - see my earlier post http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ight=dual+boot and http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ight=dual+boot

I don't want to tamper with my main HDD - hence the second 6GB HDD.

In an update to the issue - My CDRW is not working with the current setup, and Promise have just recommended that I place both HSS on the Controller Card. So the setup I want to install Linux to now looks like:

On Promise Controller:
IDE1 - HDD 1, 80GB WinXP
IDE2 - HDD 2, 6GB, 250mb Win partion, rest RH8

On mobo:
IDE 0 - DVD
IDE 1 - CDR

Ta,
froggy
