You are talking about which program? Your own program or apps like sendmail etc?

if it is Your own program:
1) compile which does all stuff for you
2) chmod +x myprog
3) ./myprog

i already tried chmod and chown. the program is aol instant messanger. heres the weird thing about this- when i try to run the program as a regular user the program half runs. i get the application box in my menu at the bottom but when i try to open it, it moves up into the desktop area but then looks as if it goes off the screen. i hope that made sense. however, if i log in as root then i can fully open it. so i tried chown, giving the regular identity ownership, but then when i tried to open it as a regular user, i get "access denied". aslo tried giving all executing access to all users 'chmod 001 aim', but that didnt work either. either the problem isnt privilage related or i dont understand how to use chmod. i read the manual for chmod but its not very specific.
