Processes accessing the Hard drive

Is there anyway to find out what processes (including system / kernal processes) are accessing the hdd? I ask because sometimes my hdd will freak out and be like that for awhile before it calms down. (Might just be virtual memory but it seems to happen even when I don't have any programs running.)

Thanks,
AL

If you run atop (better than top, search freshmeat.net) you can make periodic reports of what is utilized. Better: run atsar (same developer as atop).

You can profile your 2.4 kernel using a lilo append = "profile=2" line, you get access to /proc/profile which shows (with readprofile) how much time the kernel spends in it's functions.

More interesting would be profiling tru LTT (search Google) but I haven't tried that yet.
