probs w/ redhat 8 installation
installing redhat 8.0
i looked, then searched, didnt find a thread, though im sure there is one for this... during installation from cd, i am asked if i have a driver disk, which i do not have. if i select no, my ocmputer stops and sits. and sits and sits. it appears i am missing a driver linux needs to install itself. im using a ge4 5200, which could be a good source of problems, but also, im using a fairly new cdrom drive, which also is needed. im -fairly- new using linux, but ive installed several times, this is new for me. help please? any additional info that woud. be useful, try my aim contact, ( thineonly ) and i will be checking in here often. thanks |
I haven't installed RH 8, but it shouldn't request a driver disk at any point (That's a sorry windows thing, for the most part). The linux kernel and XFree86 (the GUI) supply the drivers, and should have drivers that work (if not the perfect drivers for your card), then you should be able to get drivers for that card from NVidea. At worst, you might end up with a screwy screen. My guess is that something's wrong with your installation selections. Did you forget to download a disk, or select an option that explicitly installs that driver, and now it wants the disk? Try the newer version of RH, or downgrade your video driver to a compatible version, then install the NVidea drivers for the 5200.

Neither the vid card nor the cd-rom should need drivers, can you tell us exactly what it asks for? More info please.
|
when it asks what type of installation i want, i choose normal, then it checks everything. either at the end of, or as far as it can get, it stops and goes to a blue screen and asks me "do you have a driver disk?" if i say yes it checks floppy drive and says no drivers etc, i dont have a driver disk. if i say no, it stops and does nothing, just sits there with blue screen

im guessing the graphics card, fx 5200, is video needed for installation?
if so, where do you find nvidia drivers for red hat 8? |
ive searched and searched, where to get the video drivers?
|
still lost...
i still have the same problem, i am prompted for a driver disk, if i answer no, i get an endless blue screen. what drivers is linux looking for?
i have : 52x24x52 cd/rw geforce fx 5200 integrated sound integrated sis900 standard network if you didnt notice, the above posts are about a year old or so, because a year ago or so i solved this problem, and i dont remember how i did it. call me forgetful, but at least i know it can be done, i just have no idea how to. please help.:) |

does anyone know whats goin on here, just ask if you need more info, please.
it's been a few days and no answer, just checking... |
ok lets sort this out
First lets start with what you haven't said:
What motherboard do you have? What is the processor and how much RAM what is the brand of you CD-RW drive? what is your connection for hard drive SATA or IDE what is your sound card? what is your keyboard make? (shouldn't be important) what is your mouse? (shouldn't be important) First you should have between 3 and 5 cds for the RH8 install depended on documentation included. I have 5. Secondly, did you check the discs to make sure that they are good, ie md5sums? Third, during install have you tried the install everything option just to see what is going on? I have run RH8 on the following: Asus A7N8X Deluxe motherboard with the Nforce2 Nvidia Chipset this uses the on-board audio and on-board Nvidia ethernet. AMD 2500+ 1 gig DDR 333 Geforce FX5600 Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard I have set up RH8 with no problems and even compiled the kernel, moving it to 2.4.20. So I know it can be done and at work we are running the 5200 FX card on RH8.0. So lets start with the hardware config and checking your CD media. cheers DH |
motherboard:(i dont know what exactly you need)
fsb 333mhz ddr400 k7s8x chipset: sis746fx ATX integrated sound, lan, usb, 5.1ch sound amd athlon 2400+ 128mg ddr 52x24x52 (unknown brand) 40g IDE hd standard keyboard, standard optical ps2 mouse. i have three installation disks, 6 including source and docs. i have used someone elses cds of the same version of RH8 with the exact same results. __the cds are copied.__(but it works for my friends and i have used burnt copies before also, sucessfully) |
I was looking for the motherboard designation ...for example mine is the A7N8x Deluxe by Asus.
I see you said A7S8x.....would this be your mobo? Cheers, DH |
yes.

by asus.

Do you have APIC turned on or off in the bios?
have you searched compatability for your chipset? have you tried installing in non-graphical mode? (also do you have any reservations about moving to Fedora?) Cheers, DH |
