Problems with Wine and other things in Kubuntu

OK, thanks for the help with installing wine and also the problems with files it deleted..

NEW ISSUES
_________________

1.) I cannot drop my backgrounds into the wallpapers file to get those backgrounds (which i downloaded) into the wallpaper selection.

2A.) WINE & XP - Part of my switching to Kubuntu was my computer couldn't run certain things. I triend to install Windows Live messenger. It did not work because it said i needed xp or beter. I did install MSN 7 however. This leads me to believe that obviusly it is the emulator making these things work, not my OS. Is there a version of wine that acts like an XP emulator? as far as i know i got the newest version (0.9.30) Fresh off winehq. Is anyone running any programs with wine that would otherwise require windows xp to run? If so how do i get that version. Maybe i havent installed wine 0.9.30 or maybe it just doesnt do that.... Let me know.
(ps i know there are other versions of chat things but having MSN is more convinient seeing as how everyone i know has windows; and having msn as well makes the features available to me like file sharing etc. lol)

2B- FINDING WINE - OK i have as mentioned installed a couple things via wine. now i cannot fine them or wine to open them. How do i use thing things i installed with wine?

Installing Wine on Ubuntu

I can't help you with sounds or wallpaper, but
I can help you install Wine. First off, it looks
like you tried to download the source tarball.
What you want is a .deb file, or better yet,
to add the Wine repository to your package manager.
See http://www.winehq.org/site/download-deb

(In the next 'Feisty Fawn' release of Ubuntu, they'll have an
updated Wine built in, so this will be easier.)

Thanks.

One off topic question:

Can you change your OS (Like from kubuntu to festie-fawn or whatever) witout having to redo everything, like more of an update my OS thing?

I'm thinking NO lol... but its worth a shot.

You can update to Kubuntu Feisty Fawn (Feisty Fawn is the version, not the distribution) without reinstalling, but you definitely don't want to. It's still alpha, and probably quite unstable right now. If you do, expect things to break.

Quote:
Removing java-gcj-compat-dev ...
Removing ecj-bootstrap ...
Removing gcj-4.1 ...
Removing libgcj7-dev ...
Removing libgcj7-awt ...
gcj is just a free Java compiler, which you probably don't need. You may need linux-kernel-headers in the future, so try to install it again and see if it complains.

Please stop jumping around. You should really only make a new topic if you have a separate problem. Overlapping questions in topics confuses everyone and is considered crossposting.
