problems with video playback in ubuntu

ok, when trying to play any kind of video in ubuntu after selecting fullscreen the video doesnt stretch to match the screen like in windows instead it just displays the video how it would be when in windowed mode except with the rest of the screen blacked out.

I also have another sort of problem with videos stalling

Have you the correct video codecs installed? Try
Code:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
Then try running your videos after rebooting..

What video player do you use?
Does it happen in all video players? If you didn't check, download VLC and check.

Gentoo

ive installed the restricted drivers and it still happens, also the problem occurrs on the two movie players I tried out, those being mplayer and vlc

one second i didnt attempt to play it after rebooting... lemme just try that now

after rebooting, the fullscreen problem is fixed, however there are still stalls occurring during the video but i dont know if this is because the video is a weird codec or what, so if anyone has any suggestions it will be greatly appreciated but im just going to test if the video stalls in normal encoded avi files

RE: problems with video playback in ubuntu

What are the specs on your computer? Do you have a good graphics card and if so are you using the default drivers or the driver from the manufacturers website? Is your computer old? Is your Ubuntu a fresh install?

h3nch 10-15-2008 05:12 PM

I don't really think I have a problem with old hardware because the same videos work fine in windows and as for graphics card drivers thats not a problem either because i think the PC has integrated graphics or something along those lines

Linux isn't Windows. Just because something works well in one OS doesn't mean it will work well in another.

Integrated graphics cards still need drivers to work.

O.K. as I said earlier the problem was not anything to do with hardware or drivers because using Mplayer after rebooting when installing the restricted extras makes videos work perfectly

So your problem is solved?
