Problems with Update Manager in Mint 13 Maya/Mate 64

Hello,
I've searched for this in this forum using several different keywords, but didn't see an existing thread.

'm currently using Mint 13 Maya/Mate 64. Starting yesterday, I've been having problems running Update Manager. Here is the error message I get:

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

and here is the explanation beneath the error message:

Failed to fetch http://dl.google.com/linux/deb/dists/stable/Release Unable to find expected entry 'non-free/binary-amd64/Packages' in Release file (Wrong sources.list entry or malformed file)
Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

I've run Update Manager anyway, with the updates it was able to access, but I'm having a couple of small glitches right now and the available updates didn't fix them. I tried restarting my computer and running Update Manager again this morning, but I got the same error message and explanation. Could anyone advise me how to rectify this problem so I can run a full update? If not, I'll give details of my glitches so I can see if I can fix them without updating.

Mint is up to 17 now and 13 is quite old, perhaps support has ended...

No, Mint 13 is one of the long-term support releases -- that's why I chose it for my last system upgrade. It's supported until April 2017.

Fixed! After an hour of Googling, found the following helpful pages:

In the end, when neither of the updates I tried worked, I removed

deb http://dl.google.com/linux/deb/ stable non-free main

from sources.list. I'm no longer getting an error on Update Manager, and my system updates are proceeding smoothly. I'll mark this as solved.

That Google line looks wrong to me. If you had it for Google Chrome the correct line is

deb http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/ stable main

Google's own package puts that line in a file in the sources.list.d folder.
