problems with running mysql


Hello everybody, HELP..........................

I been trying to get mysql to run on mandrake 9.2 and its just not working.
used the following ./configure --prefix=/wwwroot/mysql --datadir=/var/mysqldata.
from what i can see the installation was successfull except for the fact that the dataase isn't saving it to datadir insted its saving it t mysql/var..
but problem is getting mysql to start....

[root@voyager bin]# mysqld_safe &
[1] 2936
[root@voyager bin]# Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /var/mysqldata

err log has the following:
031120 07:24:51 mysqld started
/wwwroot/mysql/libexec/mysqld: Can't read dir of '/root/tmp/' (Errcode: 13)

InnoDB: The error means mysqld does not have the access rights to
InnoDB: the directory.
InnoDB: File name ./ibdata1

InnoDB: Cannot continue operation.

*****by default innodb is disabled in my.cfg
