Hey guys,

I just installed ubuntu the other night on a fairly old intel box (Intel 845grg motherboard) and found out that much to my dissapointment, the sound didnt work at all.

I've run modprobe | grep snd and nothing comes up (if that does anything for anyone here).

I've also updated my distro to no avail.

Make sure the sound is not disabled in bios. The AC97 audio controller is pretty common and I would think your version of ubuntu has the driver.

Sound is enabled in the bios. I'd think that if it wasnt enabled then it wouldn't show up in lspci anyhow.

Its gotta be something deeper. I'm going to see if it works in another OS and report back.

If you have a later model live cd give it a try. I presume you have made sure the speakers are working, sometimes the sound volume needs to be turned up a lot higher depending on your distro.
