problems with i3status

I recently begain experiementing with the i3 window manager. So far I like everything about it except the status bar. I have probably spent 4 or 5 hours trying every tutorial I can find on the internet and I still don't have a working status bar.

In my ~/.i3/config file I initiate the status bar with the line

Code:
status_command i3status -c ~/.i3/i3status.conf
which coorisponds to a status file which I pretty much copied from this tutorial

http://i3wm.org/i3status/manpage.html

below is the i3bar section of my config file.

No matter what I do I am unable to see the status bar. If I run the command it executes and appears to show the correct status information in the shell. Other commands in the config file seem to work as well. It seems like the config file isn't even trying to execute the command i3status.

Code:
# Start i3bar to display a workspace bar (plus the system information i3status
# finds out, if available)
bar {
        i3bar_command /usr/bin/i3bar
        status_command i3status -c ~/.i3/i3status.conf
        #status_command conky -c ~/.i3bar_conkyrc
        #status_command ~/bin/i3bar_conky_json.sh
        mode dock
        output LVDS1
        position bottom
        tray_output LVDS1
        workspace_buttons yes

       colors {
         background #000000
         statusline #ffffff
       }
}

You need to coordinate three files to accomplish.

.i3/config
.i3-bar-config (default name is different )
.i3-conky-config.

check out my config files for reference.

I'm getting messages that your config file has errors in it (Just wanted to try something that works)
Any idea what that might be about?

They work fine on my end.

My initial reaction maybe that you don't have the fonts installed that I am using. To help further I would need to know where the error was.
