Problems with booting
 

Hi,
I installed Windows XP and Redhat Linux 9.0 successfully on my computer. But i have a problem. If I boot Linux it stops at the point "searching for module-dependeny" (I hope i translated it correctly, because iam from germany). My computer stops at this point for a while and shows then some lines and at the end it shows " in interrupt handle-no syncing". And nothing goes on.
Here is my computer configuration:
Athlon Xp 1700+
MB: Abit NF-S 7 Rev. 2 (with a SATA controller)
Radeon 9700
Two 80 GB Harddrives in a Raid 0 stripped-set (I installed the driver at the installation correctly)
Audigy2 Soundcard
I hope i discribed my problem well and hope you can help me.

The booting process doesn't show you all the messages, but it's enought to dig for the answer. The command it was processing with error was 'depmod -a'. So try it manually, probably it'll give you a clue. If not, save the output and post it here. 'depmod -a' should be run as root, so boot your Linux, log in as your normal user, open a terminal, type 'su' command. It'll ask you for root password, type it. Then you're root and can run 'depmod -a'.

Do you have in the lines printed before "in interrupt handle-no syncing" something like 'Kernel panic' or series of hex values (it looks this way: 0xff, values can be different, but starts from 0x).? If you do, the easiest thing will be to reinstall (if RH doesn't work the second time, try Mandrake or SuSE). The problem is that there's a serious problem with one of the drivers (probably your RAID, but it's hard to say without the full output). Second reason is to install another kernel, but then you need another Linux machine to compile it (or download a newer version from Redhat updates). You should be able to access all files (so, modify them) using RH boot disk as rescue disk.

I download now the version of Manedrake. I already tried to reinstall but it didnt work either. Thanks for your help. I should remember this great forum.

Ohh, i forgot something to ask. How can i get those hex values. It showes some but i cant remember them all and writing down will be a lot of work.

So you get hex values? It's a kernel thing... If you're sure the Mandrake cds are OK, try with a different distro, your problem requires much work to solve with current MDK version.
