Problems, problems, problems. Lets start with the soundcard

:Pengy: I have just installed my first linux system (SuSE 6.2 publishers edition) and I have no idea how to get my soundcard, NIC, modem or floppy disk to actually work. I have read other threads on these problems but I am a newbie of the highest order and have dificulty understanding the solutions set out.
Lets start with the ES 1868 AudioDrive sound card.
I tried /usr/sbin/sndconfig but it said there is no sndconfig dir.

I need:
1. someone to help me
2. everything explain as though I'm a village idiot

Please help!

I'm not anywhere close to considering myself knowledgeable so i won't try to give you instructions. there is a alsa how to that really helped me get my sound working. i had to download 3 sets of files: alsa-drivers alsa-lib alsa-utils. i had to compile these. i ran into an error that basically said it could not find my kernel so i had to make a symbolic link. the other big key is to unmute the sound card. you might want to try alsamixer from root login and see if that brings up the mixer. may just be a matter of unmuting it.

Thanks anyway for your advice. Thats a solution I haven't read in other threads. If someone could give me some relatively simple instructions on the how, where, when of this alsa thing, that would be great.

Whats a Floppy Disk? My last 4 computers have not had Floppy Drives. :D

Usually I wouldn't care about the floppy but since my modem isn't working/configured I need it to transfer downloaded files from my Windows box to my (largely non-functional) linux box. I'm about to post new threads to seek help with my floppy and modem seperately.

./configure;make;make install

restart your computer,OK.
