Problems, Problems and More Problems!
 

Hi,
I have RH 8.0(with a GNOME desktop) on a 20 GB hdd with 2 GB allotted to Linux.
I also have 400 MB swap space and 128 MB RAM. Currently, I am experiencing the following problems:

1. I am unable to connect to the internet using my external USB modem, even though Kudzu detects it.(It says: 'Generic Serial Modem found.')
But, when I try to activate the device through my RH Network Connection Centre, I get the warning 'Device /dev/ttys0(my modem port) can't be activated.' My modem's speed is 33.6 kbps and is of GVC make.It is a data/fax/voice modem.

2. I have a Yamaha OPL-3-SA3 soundcard which isn't getting detected by the OS. I also downloaded Alsa driver ver 0.5.2 from the Alsa website, but couldn't understand the installation proceedure even after reading it.Please help.

3. Some applications(OpenOffice applications in particular) take ages to load, and some games(Chromium,Maelstorm,TuxRacer) are terribly slow and eventually crash the OS everytime I run them. I use a dual boot system with Windows as the other OS and can play games like NFS,FIFA,etc. without any problem.
So, what's wrong with RH?

4. Sometimes the Nautilus file manager crashes and gives the following message: 'Error:Nautilus file manager crashed due to segmentation fault'. Nautilus gets closed, but the OS doesn't crash. What could be the problem?

Please try to solve the above problems.Even if you can't solve all of them, please try to solve the first one.(Modem connection).

Don't know much about the other problems, but I can almost guarantee you that the slowness of games like TuxRacer, Chromium etc. is caused by outdated or incorrect video card drivers. Make sure you have properly configured your video card. If it's an nvidia, check out their website for Linux drivers.

OpenOffice is a very large application. It's supposed to take a while to load :)

As for nautilus crashing - sometimes programs have bugs. Make sure you have applied any patches or updates that have been released. Is it crashing at random, or just when you do something in particular?
