Question problems playing back dvd


hi i cant seem to get purchased dvds to play on my laptop i have followed all the help files on the subject and it says all the files i need are installed and dvds will play i am using ubunto 8.10 and have loaded x
gxine,vlc,and toem players none work dvd plays for 5 to 8secs and shuts down

it seems you need to install 'libdvdcss'.

check the laws in your country

i have tried your suggestion no difference i am in the uk nothing seems to work at the moment thanks for your time

Did you install vlc using the procedures in this link? If not, could you try again following the advice from vlc?

try running it from the command line to see if there is some weird error that it prints out (perhaps libdvdread related).

maybe strace xine will give more to go on ?

tried everything suggested i think its format and start again got it to play 28 seconds video then bumped no just closes straight away

Is it just this one dvd movie??or is it all dvd movies you try??Have you tried playing dvd in dvd player or another pc to make sure its not dvd itself.

first thanks for your reply
i have used this and other discs on other computers and stand alone dvd players all play okay i am now getting a refusal to play any video unless i restart the laptop once restarted it will play a avi or mpeg on closing the player it wont play there is no error report the player just shuts down
