Problems installing RedHat v8.0 on a Dell Dimension 2350
 

I tried installing it but when I do a blue screen comes up and nothing happens. My computer is working and so is my cd-rom but nothing happens. I've waited about a half hour and no luck. Can anyone help?

Just for your info I downloaded all the iso files and burned em to a cd. The CDs work fine.

I just want to know what to do...

Blue screen? Did you change your BIOS settings so that you are booting to the cdrom drive?

Yes... The cd starts up before windows does....I get to the setup screen and it asks me wether i want to use the graphics or text setup and both lead me to the blue screen

Like it'll do all these tests and stuff then lead me to a blue screen

hmmm...Did you do a checksum on iso images? Its possible that they or the cd has been corrupted.

Also, what hardware is on your Dell Dimension 2350? Is this a newer model computer?

CD-Burner, nothing special, no this is a refurbished(sp?) pc i bought from dell..., and a checksum, how do i do that?

md5sum <file>

You should check your iso files by doing:

md5sum fooname.iso

This will give you a bunch of numbers and letters that should match up EXACTLY to the numbers and letters in the MD5SUM section of the site that you downloaded the files from.

Nope...

Nm, I got it to install. I put in the first disc, it installed for awhile and then i had to put in the second disc. It finally installed and then it ran all these tests and ejected the second cd and told me "You can now safely reboot your system" So i did that..

It shows my bios screen and then it shows a black screen with the words "Missing 'Io.Sys'"

And i cant do anything except turn off my computer. Wat's going on? Can anyone help? Thanks soooooo much!

what bootloader did you install? Grub? LILO? And where did you install it? In the Master Boot Record or on the first partition?

Not installing a boot loader for Linux or not installing it in the master boot record of a machine which previously had Windoze on it could lead to trouble when the MBR tries to load windoze and can't find the right operating system.

Forget Linux it screwed up my computer and all my Windows files were lost. I'm re-installing windows... lata and thanks for the help

Sorry I didn't see your posts, just happened to be checking out this forum for 2350 compatibility for a friend.

You didn't lose your Windows data, you just couldn't see it.

All you needed to do was reboot with a W___ Floppy and go into fdisk and enter < fdisk/mbr > this command restores your master boot record and gives you access to your Windoze data.
