Problems installing mail system (mysql, cyrus, postfix)

Short Version:
-Mysql won't install from source.
-Make returns "make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop."
-This may have something to do with a binary version already installed.

Okay, here's my problem.
My goal is to run mail server for my new domain. I'm very new to all of this and fairly new to linux.

In this paragraph I'm going to state my history with linux so that people can get a feel for what I know, this will be, in most cases, irrelevant, so feel free to skip it if you just want to get on with my problems.
My laptop crashed late lastyear and I installed mandrake (a friend game me a copy) as I couldn't find my XP or 2k install CDs. To my suprise I found it a lot like windows, I used it for about six months with open office for typical enduser stuff. I put debian on it after those six months as I heard it was pretty good and had power if you were willing to learn and have the time. I'm an introverted seventeen year old highschool student, so time and will I have . I used debian for a bit of programming (I'm sort of learning C/C++ when I can) and the occasional game of nethack. Other than that I didn't do much with it. I've now (five days ago) got it running on a box at home with an apache webserver set up for a domain I recently purchased. I guess what I'm saying is I've got a solid knowledge of Windows and a miniscule knowledge of Linux.

The problem:
I want to run a webserver so that I can mail accounts @mydomain.com I really have no idea what I'm doing here. I've done some research and I think I want to be using cyrus and maybe postfix. The main decider for postfix was this (http://www.delouw.ch/linux/Postfix-C...dm-HOWTO/html/) HOWTO. I thought, great I'll just install it all with the instructions from here!
This was after trying to install postfix and having some trouble (not the issue right now).
I've run into a fairly big snag at the first step.
I'm trying to install mysql. Unfortunately I downloaded the binary by mistake first and treated it like source (I think this is the problem, like I said, I've got no idea what I'm doing). So I've got mysql installed, or so I think, but I don't want it there. I'd like to comple the version 4 source to my specs and do it that way, or rather the HOWTO's specs. I foolishly thought I could just do this anyway, which has not been the case.
I ./configure, then make, but make returns:
"make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop."
The output of ./configure is long and I don't know enough to dissect it. If someone does it's here.

I realise this is a lot of information for one mysql problem, but I think there may be other problems ahead and I have a lot more questions and figure there's no harm in asking. I would rather have it all in one thread as it's all about one topic. Hence the somewhat long post. Either way, there's a short version at the start.

I just recently attempted to get the mysql, cyrus, & postfix combo going, but to no avail. If I do come up with any solutions, I will let you know.
