Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

I have never installed Linux and have some problems installing Mandrake 10.0 Official.
During installation, I got a message saying: There was an error installing packages: yelp-2.4.2-4mdk.i586. Go on anyway ? I continued and got the same error messages for zenity-1.8-1mdk.i586, and xlockmore-5.11-1mdk.i586.
When the installation was complete, I was prompted to reboot. When I did, the screen when blank and I got this message: FBDEV(0): FBIOPAN_DISPLAY: Invalid argument. unmount failed: /tmp/stage2. unmount failed: /mnt. failed to mount some filesystems.
After that I held down CTL-SHFT-DEL, and it rebooted, but stayed on "Checking for new hardware" for about 10 mins.
When it did start up (with Gnome), I was unable to connect to the internet. When I checked under the list of hardware I didn't see the USB ADSL modem I have (Zyxel Prestige 630). I have the linux drivers for the modem on a floppy, but not sure how to install them.
I've had the same kind of problems installing Mandrake 10.1 and Slackware 10:
Installation just crashes while installing a specific package (like x11-75dpi-fonts).
I also tried installing Debian 3.0r3 via net_install but installation crashed right away.
I've verified all the ISOs, tried running the installation with different kernels and also
mounting ISOs from hard disk instead of the CDs.
I have an AMD Athlon XP 2700+ processor, 512MB RAM, a CD-RW/DVD drive
and 120GB hard disk with a 20GB Ext2 -partition and a 1GB Linux Swap-partition.
What's wrong? Any help would be welcome and appreciated.
