Problems getting out of x-server

I was told that in Fedora Core 3 that you went into root and put in telinit 3 to get out of x-server but that didn't work. Well it did work I got out of x-server but it locked (sord of)

It just stopped loading anything after anaconda (think is what it's called) hit the "ok" stage...nothing after that. I had to power off my computer to get back into the system. I need to get out of x-server to install my graphics driver.

Thanks

Edit /etc/inittab. Find line
id:5:initdefault
Replace 5 (it means X) with 3 (it means text mode). Reboot. Your computer will boot to text mode. Install your driver, then change 3 back to 5 and you can reboot or run 'init 5'.
