Problems connecting Fedora Core I to Internet

I'm new to Linux, and I'm experiencing a couple of problems with Fedora Core I. Whenever I go to activate my modem--my network device--the dialog box reads "Activating network drive...please wait", but nothing ever happens. What am I doing wrong? I'm on Earthlink--using Windows XP--but I would like to be able to connect to the Internet using my Linux machine. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

was the modem auto detected ?
what modem do you have ?
internal or external ?
is it a hardware modem, or a windows modem ?
if it is a windows modem, do you have the correct win-modem driver ?
what does cat /proc/pci say about your modem ? (assuming it is an internal pci modem)
