problems at boot with X server
 

Hi all, I'm new to the whole Linux experience.
Here's the problem I am having, after install on the first boot, I get this message" I cannot start the X server(your graphical interface). It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?"
At that point I am lost, no matter what , the PC either reboots or will take me to the localhost login. I don't know how to login. I have a root password set up during install, but dont know what the actual login name is? Is it just "root"
Even if I did get to view the X server output that it states I am sure I wouldn't have a clue what to do!!

I am trying to use Fedora 1. No dual boot or the like. Sony Vaio, bout 4 years old. 256MB ram, 20 Gb HD, 32MB Nvidia TNT video card( which has posed problems for me before in Windows).
Could someone please help me out? I'm lost.

You need to install the latest Nvidia driver. Go to Nvidia's website and download the latest driver. There are instructions posted on the website.
I'm sure you will have additional questions once you have read the installation instructions.

BTW you are correct the administrator user name is "root" which should only be used for administrative type tasks. In addition to root you should of also created a user. This username is what you should use to log on normally.

Concerning the user accounts, I dont believe i had the option to create another account other than root during install. Can i do that after I get up and running?
Ok, I went to Nvidia website. I can barely decipher it, I am linux-illiterate, Ill admit. I gather I need two files to update, not sure which however.
Any step by step for determining what files I need and the procedure? I read the text file from Nvidia, it didnt seem very clear.

Worry about the Nvidia driver later. Login at the command prompt with the username root and the password you chose when you installed. Then run

xf86config

It will ask you loads of questions. For the driver for your graphics card just choose the generic nv nvidia driver. It's not ideal, you would be wise to install the Nvidia drivers but the nv one works. You'll need to know the vertical and horizontal refresh rates for your monitor. If you don't have the specs in the manual it came with type the make and model into google. Google knows everything. God bless Google. Choice of mouse can be tricky, /dev/psaux is the input that works for my ps2 wheelmouse.
There may be an easier way. If you have another version of Linux installed that works you could just copy the config file /etc/X11/XF86Config into Fedora.
