Problems After Kernel Change
 

Hi,

I'm new to Linux and I've started off by using a failry old version of RH 7.2. I didn't change anything after the default install. At any rate, the kernel it had was 2.4.7 and I decided to update it to kernel 2.4.17

Well, everything seemed to go smoothly until I restarted...
At that point I got the following message

Failure loading /root
(It started to check the 'corrupted' file system) ?!
Then promptly stopped and asked me to enter to root password and "run fsck manully i.e. without -a -p" if I remember correctly....
As you can imagine, newbie, file system corruption etc...not good

After I worked my way through that, I rebooted and was told that my soundcard had been removed....
Kudzu asked me whether I wanted to remove the config, keep it or do nothing. I said keep it (I didn't know what the issue was - best if I didn't mess anything up any further)

When I loaded up KDE and tried to play an mp3 using XMMS, I was told that

"Couldn't open audio"

However, I can play mp3s using Noatun....
Why is this? Is there somewhere I can get info concerning this?

Also, is there a file to which all the messages generated during bootup are stored?

there shouldn't be any major issues in changing from 2.4.7 to 2.4.17 - it probably has to do with the configuration of the kernel. if you can, select the configuration from your old kernel, and load it on 2.4.17.
