Smile Problems adjusting resolution to fit monitor

I have a Fedora 8 os running on a asustek P4P800 mother board, intel pentium 4, nvivda Riva 128. 2 Gig of memory, i have been unable to set the display resolution to 1600x900... 1440x900 is as close as i can get. still the display returns to 800x600 after restarting. I bought a new monitor HP w2071d hoping that the OS would detect the proper screen resolution automatically but that did not work. I have tried to find a set of driver's for the monitor but i guess i don't know the right question to ask.I attempted to use the Nvida auto detect on there web site but they do not support Linux OS for that application. If I found the driver to match the monitor and the fedora 8 OS i may not no how to load it to the system. I am new to fedora and Linux in general some things just avoid my comprehension.

Please Help me if you can

well, first, fedora 8 reached end-of-life exactly 4 years ago today, so I'm curious as to why you want to run such outdated software. The open-source Nvidia drivers have improved *dramatically* over the last couple of years, so if you install something fresher you might just get full video support out of the box, without the proprietary driver.

Second, the newest proprietary driver that supports your card is version 71.86.15, which you can download here:
