problems acsessing pop3 server in SuSE 10.0

i have just installer SuSE 10.0 on a machine previuously running mandrake and before that windowz ME

i downloaded Thunderbird as i like the interface and added my normal email adress.

everything added fine but when i came toi chek for mail teh firts time i got an error message.

could not conect to server pop3.xxxxxx.net conection was refused

(server name replaced by Xs)

the next time everything worked and it asked for my password then downloaded the mail...

however after this all i get is teh same errror message again...
i tryed evolution and i get this error message:

could not connect to pop3.xxxxx.net nbetwork is unreachable

exactly the same happedns in both clients with a differnt pop3 server.

my internet conection is via eth:0 to a adsl conection via a NAT firewall

the internal SuSE firewall is turnerd off
and my internet conection is working fine as i am writing this in forefox on the same box...

the email server is definatly up as i can acsess it from windowz and anotehr machine of mine running mandrake

any ideas on how to fix this?

I don't know if this helps, but:
Are you using the right SSL / port settings for your server in your e-mail client?

out of the 2 email servers one needs a differnt port setup...
and teh otehr used the defaults...
neitehr work...

i can ping them both and get a reply...
coudl it be some firewall problem even though i have tried to turn the firewall off.

what firewall are you using?
You stated you tried to turn the firewall off. Did that help on the https:// issue?
