Problem with Windows ICS

Hi there, i'm new to both Linux and this forum :)

My problem is this: i have a windows network at my place, one PC acting as a server and sharing its connection to the other two, each one accessing the other two normally. When I try to connect another PC with RedHat 9, i can't either browse the internet or access the windows' computers. I have Samba installed, and I can ping the other PCs (one.mshome.net / two.mshome.net) normally, but I can't get Windows Connection Sharing to work.

Hope you can help me

Oh, and another thing:

When i try to see the other computers on my network, the following error occurs: "Uncapable to show "smb:\\" because Nautilus couldn't reach the main browser SMB. Check if SMB server is running on the local network"

(i translated the error message to english, so probably it's not the real one :D)

FIrst things first. What flavour or windoze are you using? If I understand your problems, you are trying to share files and printers with Samba, (using NETBEUI). You are also trying to access the internet through a Windoze machine, (using TCP/IP). Is that correct?

One thing at a time. First the internet connection. Try and ping from the RH machine to the other machines on your local network, and get that working first. You need to assign IP addresses in the same sub network. I think you will have to tell RH what the gateway address is. I don't use this kind of setup. I have a router, that reduces the setup complexity. Once you can ping the gateway, and RH knows who the gateway is, it should work.

I set up Samba after I installed Webmin. Webmin allows you to configure your Linux box locally, or through the network. The Samba setup is relativley easy to figure out. As I remember it, you assign the RH machine to the same workgroup as your Windoze machines, and give teh RH machine a unique name, same as you would in windoze. The only fly in the ointment I remember is Linux by default encrypts the passwords, and you have to turn that off. You can turn that off with Webmin. Webmin has many other advantages. It can be used to configure most of the network servers you have in RH, or any other distro. Hope this helps you out.

I'm using Windows XP in all PCs, and on this one i have also a partition with RedHat 9.

Yup.

I can ping Windows from Linux and Linux from Windows, so I don't think it's really a network problem, it seems more like a samba problem (but maybe i'm wrong).

I'll install Webmin and see if I can solve it, i'll later post here for help or to thank :)

I have already solved my problem, after all it was a simple thing: my brother installed a firewall (without letting me me know of it), which aparently blocks requests from RH but not from WinXP. I'm trying to find a solution for this new problem now.

Thanks for all the help :)

Maybe you need to let the IP from the RH box through...

What happens when you type "host www.yahoo.com" on your RH box? I was also wondering if you're able to resolve IP addresses correctly and maybe that's why you couldn't get out...
