Unhappy problem with virtualbox installation in Fedora 9

Hi,
I have installed virtualbox 2.2 in a fedora 9 box.
After the installation I run /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup but I receive the following:
Stopping VirtualBox kernel module [ OK ]
Recompiling VirtualBox kernel module [FAILED]
(Look at /var/log/vbox-install.log to find out what went wrong)

These are in the log file: Makefile:142: "*** Error: unable to find the sources of your current Linux kernel. Specify KERN_DIR=<directory> and run Make again. Stop."

The following are installed

kernel-2.6.25.10-86.fc9.i686
kernel-debug-2.6.26.5-45.fc9.i686
kernel-2.6.26.5-45.fc9.i686
kernel-debug-devel-2.6.26.5-45.fc9.i686
kernel-devel-2.6.26.5-45.fc9.i586
kerneloops-0.11-1.fc9.i386
kernel-headers-2.6.26.5-45.fc9.i386

Any help on this?

Thanks,
John

You're hitting an issue installing the VB kernel module, because it needs the sources for your kernel! A quick flick using google reveals that the kernel sources are no longer included in fedora 9, and the package kernel-devel should give the ability to compile external modules. You are trying to compile an external module, but do not have this package included. Take a look at section 9.4 at the bottom of this page: http://docs.fedoraproject.org/releas...sn-Kernel.html

Try:

Code:
yum install kernel-devel
then retry

Code:
/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
or whatever the command you were using to compile the external module.

Hope that helps, I don't run Fedora myself, but used to run a CentOS box which would be quite similar.

problem fixed

Many thanks for the reply.

Kernel-header was already installed. I removed it (yum remove...) and reinstalled it (yum install...) and now it works!

I don't know why, I had removed/re-isntalled it previously using yumex but it didn't work.

So, the problem is fixed but I don't understand how.

Thanks again,
John

Check when kernel-devel was installed, that will probably provide your answer! Glad it worked for you. Perhaps kernel-headers was a bad install!
