problem with UBUNTU 5.1

I installed Ubuntu 5.10. There r five folders named sda1,sda5,sda6,sda7,sda8 on my desktop. When i open any of these it says that the folder could not be opened and it says that i dont have the permission. In the properties\permissions the owner is set as root. What should i do do make them readable ? Can i store any thing in those folders .

Those folders are actually partitions on your hard drive. They might contain other operating systems, file systems, etc. First you need to mount the folders, usually by right clicking on them and selecting mount. You can usually change permissions the same way, by right clicking and selecting "permissions" or the like.

I would google for "beginner ubuntu guide" or "newbie ubuntu guide" to help you get a feeling for how to do things in Ubuntu.

Welcome to linux!

Hmmmm---there IS no 5.1---it is 5.10

Seriously, how did all those folders get there?? sounds very strange

Check out Ubuntu forums and the Ubuntu users guide---both will pop out in a Google search
