problem with terminal for ubuntu

hi everyone

im having a problem with my terminal on ubuntu when i type a command to install a package eg sudo dpkg -i lmms it asks for my root password as follows. [sudo] password for noel: when i go to type my password it wont let me.if you could help me i would greatly appreciate it.

With Ubuntu, you dont run as root you enter your normal user password.
In some cases the characters are not echoed on the screen, so continue to enter your password as normal and press enter.
