Problem with subtitles

hi there...i have the following problem...i cannot view subtitles of .sub format in my computer...this is the error i get when i give the command "mplayer /mnt/usb/Movies/XXX.avi -sub /mnt/usb/Movies/XXX.sub"
Code:
Playing /mnt/usb/Movies/XXX.avi.
No matching VOBSUB language found!
AVI file format detected.
VIDEO: [XVID] 608x256 12bpp 23.976 fps 712.2 kbps (86.9 kbyte/s)
Clip info:
 Software: VirtualDubMod 1.5.10.2 (build 2540/release)
SUB: Could not determine file format
Cannot load subtitles: /mnt/usb/Movies/XXX.sub
SUB: Could not determine file format
Cannot load subtitles: /mnt/usb/Movies/XXX.sub

whereas the .sub file can't be faulty because in Windows it shows the subtitles just fine...any suggestions?? what should i look for?? thanks in advance...
