Question problem with password in terminal in Ubuntu 12.04

Hi,
I am having a problem trying to install the latest update for my HP printer, when I get to the enter password stage (I know its not supposed to show the password). I've seen other posts with similar problems and one answer seems to be to type sudo before the command, well being a newbie just exactly where is the point to type sudo? I've tried before my password and no go.
So come on what am I missing here , please help
