Problem with nvidia graphics driver and glx

Hi, im pretty desperate. I suspect this is quite easy to solve and obvious to someone with more wits, but here it is:
I installed my nvidia driver with a script that i downloaded from the nvidia homepage. Now i could even login to KDE with that, graphics were working. I made a source compilation of Ur Quan Masters (a game that uses glx) and tried to start it. It told me that that glx couldnt be initialized. I went ahead and installed the nvidia-glx package (sarge), tried again, didnt work with a segmentation error. Next i purged nvidia-glx package and also uninstalled the nvidia drivers script, and did a reboot. naturally i had no graphics at all, but i wanted to redo my xfree86 configuration. so after installing first the script again and then the nvidia-glx package i did dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 as root. went through, and worked. i even had glx, uqm was working now very nicely. now after another reboot xserver didnt even go up properly, i just have a black screen where kdm login should be, and appaerently no significant errors in the logfile:

and i cant even try to reinstall the script anymore, because i dont know how i end X. no matter what i kill, the script keeps telling me there is an X server running.
i also have my XF86Config-4 configuration file at hand:

# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder3) Wed Dec 14 16:39:22 PST 2005

# XF86Config-4 (XFree86 X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the XF86Config-4 manual page.
# (Type "man XF86Config-4" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xfree86 package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xfree86
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following commands as root:
#
# cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.custom
# md5sum /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 >/var/lib/xfree86/XF86Config-4.md5sum

The key combination to kill X is CTRL + ALT + BACKSPACE

In Debian gdm will automatically restart X so you need to shutdown GDM first.. (or xdm or kdm whatever the case may be.. )
I prefer the Debian way of installing the nVidia drivers using the Module assistant..
su -
/etc/init.d/gdm stop
apt-get update
apt-get install module-assistant nvidia-kernel-common
m-a prepare
m-a a-i nvidia

apt-get install nvidia-glx

Edit your xfree86.conf according to nVidias specifications.
Backup the file first
cp -p /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.bak

Edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4: use vim, pico, or nano whatever editor you are familiar with..

* In the "Module" section, be sure that you have a line

Load "glx"

and remove or comment out any lines that refer to the "dri" or "GLCore" modules.

* In the "Device" section for your video card, be sure you have a line

Driver "nvidia"

/etc/init.d/gdm start to restart your X server
You should see the nVidia logo flash on the screen as X starts to tell you that your Drivers are working..

I noticed in there your monitor name is listed as "nonamecrap"

While it may be a humorous input from a some programmer, it might mean a slight problem for you.

What I mean is I have experienced a lot of problems with my NVIDIA card (Geforce 6600 AGP 256mb) when I have the drivers installed but not the correct monitor selected. I have experienced this problem in FC5 as well as Winxp and Win2k. Sounds like it may be a place to start.

Monitor name is really irrelevant as long as it matches in all the different sections of the config file..

Code:
Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "Visual SensatKDS"
        HorizSync 30-64
        VertRefresh 50-60
        Option "DPMS"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Default Screen"
        Device "Generic Video Card"
        Monitor "Visual SensatKDS"
The important part is the Vertical and horizontal settings

First thanks for the answers !
Now, i already knew about the key-combination to shut down, i tried that. But the black screen remained - also after i killed kdm. Very very surprisingly though after i purged nvidia-glx package again and uninstalled, then reinstalled the script-driver, DIDNT reconfigure xfree86 though, now everything works again ! and now with glx ! I am really confused. Not that i would complain about this, but i dont get why glx now works under the same conditions (supposedly) as i had before where it was not working. But thanks anyway for the description of the way to install the nvidia-glx package properly, one day i might need it. Concerning the screen-name - it really is a noname-crap tft ^^

Every time you do a Kernel Update you need to install the nvidia driver all over again
using the module assistant aftter a kernel update its like 3 lines and you are done, Debian will automatically grab the versions it needs so you don't have to go download installers from nVidias site.

m-a prepare
m-a a-i nvidia
apt-get install nvidia-glx

Drop dead simple, which is one reason I like this method..
You are correct that once your Config has been editied you really don't need to touch it again, unless it's to add support for that brand new Wide screen LCD you just purchased

Either way, glad you got it working.
