Problem with Network Manager in FC3

Hello again...

I go my new notebook on Thursday, and immediately blew away the windows that came with it and loaded up FC3. Thanks to all the help in this forum from my previous install, it went very well.

I loaded up Network Manager on the weekend to help me connect to a WLAN at my in-laws. That went well, and I connected no problem. When I got back to my desk today and plugged into the network, I couldn't use it. The card would come up fine, and syncronize my time, then the network would go dead and I couldn't see/do anything.

After trying several things, I disabled the Network Manager service and rebooted, and connected just fine.

Do I need to start and stop this service anytime I want to go wireless and back? Or is there a config thing I am missing?

Thanks!
Rob

So, am I to understand that you are trying to connect to a wired network at home?

I connect to a wireless network at home, and a wired network at the office. My notebook has a built in NIC for wired, and I use a Linksys WIFI card at home.

With Network Manager running, I cannot connect with the wired NIC, whether the WIFI card is plugged in or not.

Thanks!

A couple of things to check (some of them may sound dumb, but bear with me):

1. Plug in the wired connection, and check for LED blinkage on the port (assuming it has LEDs to observe).

2. Check BIOS settings to make sure that the internal NIC is enabled (if unsure, try resetting the BIOS settings to setup defaults).

3. Download a copy of Knoppix, and boot from that (try that with the wireless card removed). See if you get a network connection then.

If all of these fail, I see two possibilities: either it's a hardware problem, or the chipset used for the wired NIC in your notebook is not supported by the kernel yet. It also might help to post the output of 'lspci.'

Hope that helps. ;)

Sorry... I must not have been clear.

With the Network Manager service running, the connection through the NIC does not work. I get link lights, and it seems to work until I log into my account (time server syncs fine). The WIFI card works fine.

With Network Manager stopped, I connect just fine with the NIC, but the WIFI is hit and miss... especially if there is a WEP key required.

I know the BIOS, NIC, and WIFI card are fine. This is not a hardware issue, but something seems funky to me with Network Manager...

hmm....that is strange....but also a little out of my league. I'd suggest searching bugzilla.redhat.com to see if you can find anyone else having similar troubles. ;)
