Does eth0 exist?

I find ifconfig and lspci to be most helpfull. If your interface is not listed with ifconfig, try 'ifconfig eth0 up x.x.x.x netmask 255.255.255.0'. If it complains about no such device, you have a driver issue, or it is there under a different name.
