Problem with MP3 Playback

I'm on a new install of Mandrake 10 and I have an NTFS partition I want to read MP3's from but for some reason the sound isnt working (the file actually plays)
CD's work fine, but I havent had a chance to test with mp3s on the Linux partitions yet.
I've tried using 2 different players and they both do the same thing, any idea what to do?
I'm using an MSI KT3 Ultra 2 (MS-6380) motherboard with built in sound.

Many of the *nix media players balk at playing mp3's because of possible copyright issues. I'm not sure if yours is one, but to get XMMS to play mp3's I had to download a hack from somewhere google pointed me. Try to find an .ogg file, and if that plays, the situation I have described is your peoblem.

Also check if any sounds can play. If you can play a cd or a .wav file off the net, and your only problem is mp3's, then look for a mp3 hack for your media player. If nothing will play, your sound card isn't installed well.

Peace,
JimBass

OK, I tried opening a shoutcast stream from xmms and that didnt work either.
I then tried opening it with Totem movie player and both the shoutcast stream and the mp3s on my windows partition worked, however, they are REALLY quiet even if I turn the volume upto max....
