I'm no expert, but I installed Linux Mint 10 which is based on ubuntu 10 on a sony vaio laptop (I don't know the model number except that it is 3 yrs old. It isn't mine) and had the same problem with the touchpad. I went to Menu and typed mouse in the search bar. Click on the result that comes up and you will find a touchpad option. All I did was increase the sensitivity of the touchpad and it worked fine after that. I don't know if that is your problem too, but am just putting in my 2 cent's worth.
