Problem with Kedit, KDE
 

Hello all, first time poster and Linux noob.

I have a question about Kate and Kedit.

I've been using Kate for a while without any problems.

However, today I tried to install Kedit.

Then I got this message:

"There was an error setting up inter-process communications for KDE. The message returned by the system was:

Could not read network connection list.
/home/mikeb/.DCOPserver_XXX__0

Please check that the "dcopserver" program is running!"

Then I uninstalled Kedit, hoping that the damage would be undone.

However, Kate still shows the same message upon startup.

So I reinstalled Kate, and got the same thing.

What did the Kedit installation mess up, and how I can I fix it so I can use Kate again?

What distro are you running? How did you install and remove kedit? What version of KDE are you running?

I installed Kedit from the command line "sudo apt-get install kedit"

I removed it via Synaptic Package Manager

I'm using Ubuntu Hardy 8.04

KDE version 4:3.5.10

From what I can determine, kedit is not available for version 4 kde. At least, www.kde.org doesn't have doc on it, and I can not find it on the repos for my distro. I suspect your repos are not set up correctly. BTW, Kate is there for ver 4.

If you did install it, I suspect it is a version for KDE 3.5, which did use the server.

Dcop server is a way for kde apps to exchange data. I have no trace of the server on my KDE 4.3 system.

What I think you should do, is look at the repos you are using, make sure you are only using ones for your current release. The Ubuntu forums should have doc on how to set them up, and verify....

If Synaptic is set up correctly, then everything that you installed should have been removed. You should be able to install Kate from synaptic, make sure the repos are correct first.

Could it be that Kedit is Kate?

At one point they were separate programs. Kate was the simple plain text editor, and kedit had some more bells and whistles built in. Either could edit plain test files. As far as I know, Kedit is no more, at least for KDE Ver 4.

Think you've got that the wrong way round, but kedit does seem to have disappeared from kde4. KWrite, which is still available, comes in between the two as far as bells & whistles is concerned.

Kedit and Kate are separate projects. Kedit was developed to be a very rudimentary editor. It is Kate and Kwrite that share code. Kate is the more fully-featured version.

Problem solved
 

Upon restarting the computer, Kate is working fine again.

P.S. I love UBUNTU and LINUX!!!!!!!! After using Windows my whole life, I must say it's great to have fast bootup and shutdown times, as well as fast downloads, no viruses, etc.
