Problem with hardware change and others

Hi. I am quite new to Debian. I found I had a serious problem which I was advised to change some configuration files. I need more details on which files and how and a bit of explanation of other files related to configuration. I am using Debian Sarge (the newest one), I think is 3.1. It happened twice already. The first time was one of the IDE port on the mobo failed. After that, I got a PCI IDE card and plugged my hard drive IDE cable on to it. However, the Debian would not complete the boot up. I had to reformat and reinstalled everything (entire Debian) as I cannot access the hard drive since Debian would not complete the boot up. Then recently, I pulled out the USB mouse and put in a ps2 mouse. Debian again would boot completely but failed to start the windows. I gave up so I used back the USB mouse and it starts fine. I find this very picky. Please advise.

I had just got myself a wireless adaptor. I am currently using a wireless g-router as a gateway (ip 192.168.62.1) and all the PCs were accessing internet through it. The wireless adaptor came with a linux driver in tar (zipped) but no instruction. How do I install it?

Thank you.

That way, it is easier for you and for the people who help to follow.

You have to untar the archive and read the instructions included in it.
Let's suppose the file is foo.tar, enter the command :
tar -xvf foo.tar
then cd to the foo directory and list the content with ls.
There should be a file called INSTALL or something like that. If you are lost, then just post the output of ls.
