problem with gparted
Hello
I have ubuntu 16.04 and am trying to install ubuntu studio with a duel boot. I have gparted live -0.26.0-2-1686.iso on a dvd to re size my partition for the install of studio. I can get to the menu for gparted so I guess I have the bios set up correctly. However, it won't run. What do I do? Also, as far as partitioning goes, I have 500gigs I want to split in half. What is the correct way of doing that? P.S. thanks for all the help on my previous posts. |
Do you mean the G-parted live CD brings you to the Main Menu but you aren't able to get the program to show you your partition so you can modify it?
Did you check the integrity of the .iso file? http://gparted.org/gparted-live/stable/CHECKSUMS.TXT If you have 500 gig's just shrink your Ubuntu 16.04 to about 248 gig's in g-parted. That will leave you 2 to 3 gigs for the swap partition. <OR> you can use the partition manager that comes with Ubuntu Studio Installer and resize your other partition that way. |

reply: yes that is what I mean. If you have 500 gig's just shrink your Ubuntu 16.04 to about 248 gig's in g-parted. fyi here are what my partitions look like.
/dev/sda/ ext4 / 463gb /dev/sda/ extended 3.43 /dev/sda5 linux swap 3.43 unallocated 1.o2 |
Instead of doing all that typing just click on the blue "Quote" button to answer.
It sounds like the program didn't burn correctly to the CD if it won't take you to the partition manager. Did you md5sum the .iso of g-parted before you burned it? If not; it may be corrupt. Code:
/dev/sda/ ext4 / 463gb Quote:
-::-If the signatures don't match don't burn it to CD.-::- |

no and I don't know how.also, am I supposed to add a swap part. between the two partitions that have the operating systems in them? |
Hi.
Code:
man md5sum Many other live distros will work as well: http://distrowatch.com/search.php?os...&status=Active On my laptop (T420) I have to enter a boot menu [F12] rather than just the bios? Have fun! :) |
Pays to read the doco - especially when you don't know what you are doing. The gparted site has links to the user manual and in that it has tips for people having problems booting - see here.
Also has a link for the checksums on the download page, but I didn't see any explanation of how to use them - a shortcoming of the (gparted) developers. I would suggest using "safe graphics" mode as in that link. If that doesn't work, reboot and try "failsafe" - both are in a sub-menu of "Other Modes". |

Code:
md5sum gparted live -0.26.0-2-1686.iso If so your ok to burn it if not the terminal will return something like; numbers don't match. |
jamison20000e and syg00 thanks for chiming in.:)

I read the jamison20000e post about md5sum and am trying to use it with the ubuntustudio I downloaded and have hit a snag.
Ubuntustudio is showing up if I list it as shown below. What am I doing wrong? |
[code]cd /home/randy/Downloads/[/code] looks like you got there so:

Or:
Code:
md5sum /home/randy/Downloads/gparted-live-0.26.0-2-i686.iso |
