Chromium says that it is compiled with the SSE2 instruction set but the processor does not provide it.

Let's check:

Code:
cat /proc/cpuinfo|grep flags
What distribution and version is it? Seems your hardware is too old for it.

"3dnow" tells me that it is an AMD processor, right? It is their version of intel's sse extensions. Did you copy this system manually from an intel machine to an AMD one? Otherwise, the ubuntu installer should have detected the hardware correctly. Ubuntu 12.04 LTS is not too old, and still supported. And I can't imagine that Ubuntu requires an intel processor...

Or did you install chromium and skype from some other source? If that is the case, you have to find a repository for your ubuntu version and get the packages from there.

Both Skype and Chromium should be available from Repository with LXLE.

Is ubuntu-restricted-extras installed?
