Before reading your thread, I didn't even know User Mode Linux existed. So obviously I'm not an expert.

Your post and subject don't mention "User Mode Linux", so I have to wonder whether that is even what you're trying to make. Maybe you just put "ARCH=um" in without knowing what it means.
I don't know what is causing the error you're getting. I'm writing this post to suggest that you're more likely to get meaningful help from someone who has built User Mode Linux and you're more likely to get their attention if you put "User Mode Linux" in the subject of the thread.
Unless, of course, you didn't want UML. In that case, don't put "ARCH=UM" in the command.
