since no one has replied I will start the ball rolling'

I do not have your hardware...but you do realise you have non-standard hardware?

here is a guide mainly for x86 hardware

Before reading your thread, I didn't even know User Mode Linux existed. So obviously I'm not an expert.

But a quick Google search found:
http://user-mode-linux.sourceforge.net/source.html

Your post and subject don't mention "User Mode Linux", so I have to wonder whether that is even what you're trying to make. Maybe you just put "ARCH=um" in without knowing what it means.

I don't know what is causing the error you're getting. I'm writing this post to suggest that you're more likely to get meaningful help from someone who has built User Mode Linux and you're more likely to get their attention if you put "User Mode Linux" in the subject of the thread.

Unless, of course, you didn't want UML. In that case, don't put "ARCH=UM" in the command.

Why not using make menuconfig or make xconfig to set the right arch for you, and then use kpkg to roll-up a nice .deb kernel package ?
