problem with Audio engines or sound card?

Hello there

I have been having some serious sound problems since "updating" through the internet. I am running SuSE 10, and my sound card is a Creative Soundblaster Audigy LS.

I am experiencing either choppy audio or none at all. When running the Helix engine in amaroK, audio skips and breaks very often. Using the Xine engine, it just skips all of my music alltogether. It won't play any of them. Same thing with XMMS, it just ignores them all and skips through to the bottom of the playlist.

When I enter the Sound System control panel in YaST, I get the following error:

Quote:

[error-control centre]
Unable to start the sound server to retrieve possible sound I/O methods.
Only automatic detection will be availible.
[OK]
In the Sound System controls itself, I can't apply any settings because the sound server refuses to start. There is only Auto Detect in the sound device setting.

Is this just my soundcard not being supported, or what? I don't understand, the problems have been the same through two installs.

Your system likely doesn't have mp3 support by default due to potential legal issues.

You need to install software to deal with this.

I think this was the case for Mandriva 10.0.

Have a search for "mp3 support in mandriva"

also

http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/

Will help you with getting the correct sources:

For example win32codecs and xine-win32

I don't use Mandriva but I understood that it should work out of the box.

Option 2 is to configure the soundcard:

install alsa-base and alsa-utils

then run alsaconf as root

Should work...

Post back if not...

Ah, I see, got that, had read it then promply forgot it...

You see I used to run suse and had the same issue (no mp3 support)

I remember having to download it from a 'pacman' source
Have a look here:

Did you try option 2?

The thread I have linked should help out, have a good read of it.

I have installed the LAME codec and tried configuring ALSA, no luck. I am still getting unable to start sound server blah blah, and now my mixer is blank.

EDIT
I have just noticed that amaroK itself is sticking every few seconds when playing audi through Helix. It is running very badly. This is using OSS as an output, because Helix doesn't support ALSA.
The Xine plugin still doesn't do anything, just skipping through everything.

Realplayer reports "Cannot open audio device - another application may be using it" when I try to open a music file.
