problem with audio and video on device
 

hello every body,
first of all i would like to say that i m completely new to LINUX(fedora to be specific),i was surfing net and was impressed by the features offered by fedora and have installed fedora 10. so if you find my question silly then please forgive me.
now my questions are (1)in my installation i downloaded the UGLY format for *.mp3 so now i m able to play the songs but when i typed
in terminal i couldn't hear the sound.so can this be my DRIVER PROBLEM?(ya my volume was full i m having Realtek AC'97 Audio for VIA sound card.

(2)and my another problem is that i m not able to play *.AVI, *.WAV,*.FLV,*.OGG,*.MPEG,etc video files. how to find there players/codecs? please can anybody write me a detailed procedure to do this(for beginner)?please it would b gr8 help to me.

You would require codecs. Try installing AMAROK : this would help automatically fetch plugins when required. What players do you have currently installed?

Are you able to play the files through a GUI? What do you see when you right click on the file?

As an aside: There is a utility called sox which can help you convert files and play them.

No doubt Fedora is one of those OS's that really try to make things simpler.. But to be honest you should have tried Ubuntu. The Rapid release cycle of Fedora will cause you ending up with allots of bugs and trouble some times.. I have recently switched from Fedora to CentOS which was a very pleasant and worthy experience.

Install amaroak, xmms or install realplayer from realplayer.bin format.. Its all about codecs that you need ..

at present i m having rythembox and totem as player.ya... when i double click to play the videos player says that u need to download following codecs...etc tec.. but when i try to download the codecs...it says "codecs/plugins not found" so it was quit cumbersome.

and in the matter of Ubuntu i surfed on net and i found fedora more DESIGNER type means i found it more LOOK BASED.so i opt for that but do u really think that i should opt for ubuntu? means it will be easy to make my self trained for linux?

I agree that fedora 's look and feel is quite good (you can make Ubuntu look very beautiful too: it depends on how you customize it). However, I would argue it isn't quite cool for beginners. Ubuntu makes transition from windows to linux very easier. The strongly supported community adds to its advantages.

Having said that, I would strongly suggest you to start with Ubuntu. :)

i had previously tried the vlc player bu it was not supporting *.avi and *.flv files.so now i installed MPLAYER which is noe working FANTASTIC.thanks for the kind co-operation.

and about ubuntu i will surely switch over to it.but to be frank now i m quite well acquainted with the fedora then too i will switch over to ubuntu. dont worry.thanks4the guidance..bye.... c u later....
