PROBLEM: window manager won't start

hi to all,
i've just installed mandrake linux 9.1 on my pc which also runs winxp pro.
i have xfree86 version 4.3.0
i've never been able to use the graphical interface (i only use command line - very laborious). the x server always crashes! or rather i should say the window manager has a real problem starting up and loading completely!
upon starting up the system, the graphical interface doesn't ever load completely. the screen flickers lots of times then i'm left with an empty, blue desktop (no icons, no task bar; nothing!) and a busy cursor which i can move around the blank blue screen.
i then CTRL+ALT+Fx to move to console mode.
when i start x, i get the following output:

Using authority file /root/.Xauthority
Writing authority file /root/.Xauthority
Using authority file /root/.Xauthority
Writing authority file /root/.Xauthority

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start
again

*after removing /tmp/.X0-lock, startx gives:

_XSERVTransSocketINETCreateListener:...SocketCreateListener() failed
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: server already running

Fatal Server Error:
Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X server isn't already running

*after killing the startx process (using top), i try startx again, and get:
(i get the same result if i do init 3, then startx)

Mandrake 9.1 seems a bit old to be installing on a fresh system? I would recommend trying one of the latest versions unless of course you need that particular version.

Continuation from http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=428706

Which windowmanager?

linux4real 05-02-2006 01:20 PM

i am in africa and the 9.1 is the only one i could lay hands on (don't mention downloading from the net).

i use both kde and gnome whiche are available on my system.

Wim Sturkenboom 05-03-2006 02:17 AM

please make a backup first of your x config file

remove all modelines; this is everything between
# Sony Vaio C1(X,XS,VE,VN)?
and
the next following EndSection

Also remove # Sony Vaio C1(X,XS,VE,VN)?

You end up with the following (partial) configuration
Code:

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "monitor1"
VendorName "Plug'n Play"
ModelName "IBM 6556 P72"
HorizSync 30-85
VertRefresh 50-150

# everything here was removed

EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "device1"
VendorName "S3 Inc."
BoardName "S3 Trio3D"
Option "power_saver"
Option "sw_cursor"
EndSection

Try this first.

If the problem is not solved, change DefaultColorDepth to DefaultDepth (I've never seen DefaultColorDepth, so that might be a mistake)
Code:

Section "Screen"
Driver "svga"
Device "device1"
Monitor "monitor1"
#New
DefaultDepth 24
#Old (now commented out)
#DefaultColorDepth 24

Try again

Still not solved? Change the defaultdepth/defaultcolordepth to something conservative (8) and try.
Code:

"Screen"
Driver "svga"
Device "device1"
Monitor "monitor1"
DefaultDepth 8

Keep this setting, even if it does not work.
Last thing to try is to change the modes in all display subsections to very conservative
Code:

Modes "640x480"
Try again

If it's now working, we can build it up again. If not, I don't know what's wrong.

PS it's very messy to have two threads. You must keep an eye on two threads and we have to check both as well.
Please indicate in one of the two where to continue
